Home Recordists

Musicians working on their recordings at home make up almost 40% of our business. While the advent of Pro Tools and other computer recording systems has made it possible to make professional quality recordings in a small home studio, there are two aspects of recording that are much, much harder to acheive in a home studio. One is tracking drums, and the other is finalizing a mix and mastering. We can work with you in both of these areas while you do all the overdub and intial mixing work at home. It’s this overdub work that is not only the most time consuming, but can also be the most creative, fun part of recording. Why pay to do this in a studio? On the other hand if you don’t have a good solid sounding drum track and rhythm bed, nothing you do later can overcome that. Here’s a typical scenario for how we work with clients who have home studios: The band comes in and tracks drums, bass and a rhythm guitar to our two-inch 16 track machine. (We’ll even loan you the pricey two inch tape so you don’t need to buy it if you don’t want to.) With our killer mic-pres, mics and a good engineer, (Many of our clients end up learning the studio well enough to engineer their own sessions) we can almost guarantee that you’ll get a great drum sound.  Make sure your bass and guitar tracks are cool, and you’ve got a solid foundation to build on. Next, we’ll transfer the tracks to whatever format you need them in: Mac or PC, Pro Tools, Cubase, Digital Performer, or just WAV or AIFF files. Take them home and have fun. On occasion, we can give clients a killer deal on renting a microphone or two if they need a better mic for vocals or something like that. If you have any questions on any part of the recording process while you’re working at home, we’re here to answer them for you. Several months later, when you’re all done overdubbing and mixing, come back in and check your mixes on our monitoring system. We also have some pretty high end plug-ins like Channel Strip, Altiverb, Real Verb, Sony Oxford + GML  EQs, GRM Tools, the complete Bomb Factory plugs and the Mackie/UAD-1 powered plug-in card. Once you’re happy with your mixes, we can also arrange for mastering with Monsterlab Audio, our in-house mastering facility owned and operated by engineer Eric Broyhill. When it’s all said and done, you’ve spent very little on a studio recording, done most of the work at home, yet you have a recording that sounds like you’ve spent months in a professional studio.
